Singing From Head to Toe

“Singing From Head to Toe” – A Feldenkrais Workshop for Singers

Sunday April 18, from 6-8 pm.  This workshop is open to any interested singer, not just SFBACC members (past and present).

“Dynamic singing from head to toe engages our awareness of sensations and imagination in myriad creative ways. Since your first utterances as a newborn baby, you’ve always used your voice. Yet, bringing awareness to how you sense what happens when you begin to sing—how you prepare and sustain a tone— is a whole new ball game.”

In this workshop, singer and teacher Karen Clark designs lessons in breath, posture, and speech articulators to enhance your experience of yourself in singing. Dress comfortably, have a padded mat on the floor and a chair handy. And, if you have movement difficulties, Karen will address modifications to help you get the most out of this session.  Even imagining the movements is beneficial and produces results.  So don’t let possible difficulties hold you back!

The Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education uses gentle movement and directed attention to help people learn new and more effective ways of moving. You can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. Since how you move is how you move through life, these improvements will often enhance your thinking, emotional regulation, and problem-solving capabilities.

The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics, and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. Moshe Feldenkrais said, “We move according to our perceived self-image.” By expanding your perception and increasing awareness, you will become more aware of your habits and tensions and develop new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity, the Feldenkrais Method assists you to live your life more fully, efficiently, and comfortably.

Contralto Karen Clark has performed around the world in repertory spanning the 12th to the 21st centuries. A devoted teacher for 40 years, Karen has taught at Princeton University, Swarthmore College, University of Southern California, and UC Berkeley. Recent recordings on various labels include premieres of song cycles by Fred Frith, Ben Johnston, Joseph Schwantner, and medieval music of Hildegard von Bingen with Vajra Voices. Karen holds degrees from the Indiana University Jacob’s School of Music where she trained in opera and early music. In 1996, Karen moved to California to train in the Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education and since that time has designed workshops for singers throughout the U.S. www.karenclark.studio
